ABOUT US
Tribal members called themselves “Nüwü”, an ancient Chemehuevi word meaning “The People”. In 1867, after a lengthy tribal war, many Chemehuevis moved to the desert oasis of Twentynine Palms, then known as the Oasis of Mara. In 1891, Congress passed “An Act for the Relief of Mission Indians in California” and authorized a reservation for the Twenty-Nine Palms Band. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland signed an Executive Order that deeded into federal trust 160 acres in Twentynine Palms for the Tribe. Today, the Tribe’s reservations include 160 acres in the city of Twentynine Palms and 240 acres in the city of Coachella, home to the Tribe’s successful Spotlight 29 Casino. The Tribe is moving forward with a visionary economic development strategy that includes the Nüwü Casino Resort & RV Park project, which will be built entirely within the Tribe’s 160-acre reservation in Twentynine Palms. Phase 1 of the project also will include a state-of-the-art sewage treatment facility as well as miles of dedicated hiking trails. Later phases of the overall development plan for the reservation may include a 100+-room national brand resort hotel, retail center, executive championship golf course and residential properties.
